“The runners have a raised floral pattern and they looked lovely with the mercury glass as well as the robins egg blue containers!” Wendy said during a recent planning meeting for our wedding vendors party coming up at the end of the month. Im thinking… Whuuuut? “And then we’ll rent linnens and champagne glasses. Dzung you can create passed hors d’oeuvres that will go with our color scheme, right?” “Of course I can!” she replies. “And Ill create little boutonnieres with our hand printed names on them!” Indy remarks. Nate says, “okay I’ll put this all in a flyer and have it printed up next week.” In my mind I start to freak out a little bit… I’m thinking, “how is ALLL THIS going to get done!” I dont even know what “hors d’oeuvres” or “runners” are… I dont know where to get tables and champagne glasses. I dont know what I would put into a boutonniere! I cant even spell half this stuff without my spell check chalking my page full of red squigglies.
“Colson… you’ll take care of the slide show?” Finally something I can jive with… “heck yeah, totally!” Easy… And then I hear this sigh… a sense of relief almost… Really? That was a concern? The slide show is a no brainer… like do it in my sleep, I do these at every wedding I shoot, AFTER I’ve been shooting for 10 hrs. And then it clicked for me… I had this “Ahh hah” moment where it all made sense.
You see, if I was planning this event by myself (which I’ve done on many occasions in the past) I’d be freaking out (which I’ve also done on many occasions in the past). There are so many things that are outside of my comfort zone… color schemes, cake stands, runners, ribbons, buttons, flyers… I’ve got no idea. But Wendy, Dzung, Nate and Indy… they do. They LOVE this stuff. They live it, breathe it, sleep it, dream it, just like I do with photos. Often times, when running my own business, I forget what its like to work in a team… A team where a group of individuals contributes something amazing, something unique in which they are truly talented… When you point all those talents towards a common goal you can create amazing things that are 10 fold what I could do on my own.
We all have our thing… we all have our little slice of the pie, our niche, that we can contribute towards that incredible event, that intangible goal, or that looming project. For me that is slide shows… it is telling stories through images, it is preserving memories for people, friends, and families for generations to come. I have to remind myself of this constantly when I’m struggling with a new booklet design, or a new marketing campaign, or planning a party for instance. Other people’s talents are resources that I can use to my benefit. I dont have to do it all. I can call on these individuals for help and in return I can do my thing… I can do my slice… and it wil be exactly what someone else is missing.
Im super excited to be a part of this “Engaged!” event on April 30th… We have no other reason to throw this event other than we love what we do, and want to share it with those who want to experience what we do best. We’ll be at BRIM hat gallery in Palo Alto from 2:00 – 5:00 PM, offering free hors d’oeuvres, champagne, and of course showing a few images. I’d love to see you there!
