12 Days of Photo Christmas: Day 11 – Indestructible GoPro HD Video Camera

On the 11th day of Christmas my true love gave to meeeeee…. a virtually indestructible, water proof, extreme sports proof GoPro HERO Naked Video Camera!

Now, I’ll first make the disclaimer that I am not a huge video guy… it by no means is something that I know a ton about, but I am a gadget guy, and this is one freaking cool gadget!  I dont actually own a Go Pro video camera, but I’ve used them a few times and my brain was fully stimulated.  These GoPro HERO is a 1080P HD video camera wrapped in a mini submarine/tank inspired case opening the world of extreme video and photography to new worlds.  If you know someone who likes to get out and about, this is your golden ticket for Christmas gift giving!

I’ve often gone wakeboarding in the summers and brought along a 5D Mark II camera and some assortment  of lenses to take pictures… It’s a little nerve racking… teetering over the side of a moving boat, trying to grab a unique angle while my friends miserably fail attempted tricks off some Kilimanjaro sized wake we created.  Its not a good way to keep camera gear in pristine condition, as hard as I try.  Put one of these things in my hands and heck, Ill just jump in the water and have people jump over my head while I get wild shots of them shredding H2O.  These video cameras allow adventure seekers to create professional looking video in extreme conditions for a super reasonable price (especially when compared to alternative waterproof camera solutions).

GoPro HERO Video Camera and a few sweet mounting options!

Another cool feature is its ability to capture time lapse still images.  Set up the camera, dial in a few settings, click the shutter button, and it will start snapping photos every 2, 5, 10, 30, or 60 seconds.  Take a series of photos over a couple hours and mash them together in a video and the result will be a totally unique and creative perspective.  Check out Simon Christen’s “The Unseen Sea,” such an awesome example of time lapse photography showcasing the rolling fog in San Francisco.  Want to set up a mini photo booth at a party?  Slap one of these on a tripod and have people pop up in front of it and pose for few seconds, snap… snap…. snap… you never even have to be there to man (or woman!) the camera.  Sure you might have to toss a few photos, but I am sure there will be a few (or twenty!!!) good ones in there.

If you know someone who is into skiing, snowboarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, biking, hang gliding, or just plain clumsy, this is a super sweet gift.
